Carla Coffin, MD, MSc, FRCPC

Dr. Coffin received her MSc (1997) under the supervision of Professor Thomas Michalak, MD (2001) from Memorial University of Newfoundland and completed a residency in Internal Medicine (2003) and Gastroenterology (2006) at the University of Calgary. In 2006 she was awarded an Advanced Hepatology fellowship from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) to complete Hepatology training with Dr. Norah Terrault at University of California, San Francisco. She joined the U of C Liver Unit in 2007 as a clinical scholar and received an Academic appointment as Assistant Professor of Medicine in 2009.

Dr Coffin is the recipient of the 2012 CIHR New Investigator Award for Biomedical/Clinical Research and has received operating grant bridge funding from CIHR (2010), and junior faculty awards including the 2010 AASLD Jan Albrecht Commitment to Clinical and Translational Research Award and the 2011 American Gastroenterology Association Research Scholar Award.In 2012, along with co-investigators Dr. Gil Kaplan and Dr. Chad Saunders she received an infrastructure grant from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and Alberta Advanced Education Technology to develop a translational health research clinical database and a Biobank.

Clinical/Research Interests

Her clinical and research interests are in chronic hepatitis B infection, hepatitis B and pregnancy, viral hepatitis and HIV co-infection, and liver transplantation.
