Evidence-Informed Hepatitis C Elimination Planning

Blueprint to inform hepatitis C elimination efforts in Canada

The Blueprint to inform hepatitis C elimination efforts in Canada was developed by CanHepC, through a consultative process, to define what needs to be done to achieve hepatitis C virus (HCV) elimination in Canada. It’s a menu of options to help provinces and territories develop their own HCV action plans to ensure we meet the World Health Organization HCV elimination targets. The Blueprint is divided into four sections: Priority populations, Prevention, Testing and diagnosis, Care and treatment, each including key objectives for developing the infrastructure and tools needed to achieve targets

The Blueprint is designed to offer options that can be tailored to different contexts, cultures, populations and areas, and to ensure equity across its objectives and targets for all priority populations.

From the Blueprint to Hepatitis C Elimination Roadmaps

Following the release of the Blueprint, CanHepC started the Hepatitis C Elimination Roadmap Project to sustain efforts towards hepatitis C elimination. Recognizing that healthcare in Canada is under provincial and territorial jurisdiction, this project aims to develop regional roadmaps to hepatitis C elimination in addition to one national Indigenous-focused roadmap to hepatitis C elimination among Indigenous peoples (i.e. First Nations, Métis and Inuit).

Objectives

The overall goal of the roadmaps is to guide the implementation of hepatitis C elimination plans at the regional/ provincial/ territorial level.

The specific objectives of the roadmaps are to:

  • Contextualize and adapt the Blueprint recommendations to regions (how & who);

  • Reach a multi-stakeholder consensus on the recommendations and actions to prioritize to reach elimination;

  • Address the specific barriers, challenges and enablers to hepatitis C elimination that pertain to regions and communities;

  • Assess each region’s progress towards elimination.

Regional/ Provincial/ Territorial Hepatitis C Elimination Reports

The Ontario Hepatitis C Elimination Roadmap

This Roadmap is a guiding policy and practice document that outlines how Ontario can take action to:

  • Advance prevention strategies, including among those at highest risk.
  • Increase the number of people tested for and diagnosed with hepatitis C.
  • Expand treatment options for easier access.

We are working closely with people with lived experience, priority populations, researchers, healthcare workers, policy-makers and community workers, connecting frontline and system-level expertise in hepatitis C.

Journeys to Wellness: Prairie Hepatitis C Roadmap

This Roadmap aims to:

  • Assess the current landscape of hep C prevention, diagnosis and treatment, identifying progress and existing gaps.
  • Uncover key barriers and enablers to effective hep C care and viral suppression
  • Establish consensus on strategic priorities for improving hep C wellness across the Prairies (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba)

The philosophy behind this report is that people with lived/ living experience are critical subject matter experts. any wisdom toward developing a Roadmap to hep C wellness must begin and end with them.
